The first time I saw St. Gaudens’ plaster casting of the SHAW MEMORIAL, it blew me across the room. There were all these soldiers of African descent, marching, purposeful, determined, with new found dignity, and starkly white from cap to boot under that plaster surface. Here is that emotion again; Colored Troops in white plaster.
