In 2005, the football rivalry between Millsaps College and Mississippi College was renewed. This trophy figure was commissioned to represent the competition and to be presented to the winning school each year. The challenge was to portray the intensity, focus, and skill of the game, while artistically revealing the beauty of athletic movement; in this case, the suspension of the receiver in mid air while the defender plants to come back to the ball. Regarding a newly completed clay figure of a wildlife scene, a young artist once asked my foundry owner, “Can you suspend that bird in the air without it touching the base?” It goes without saying, even in the art world, there are limitations.
