BAILEY HOWELL

2006
12” x 8” x 7”
bronze

In 2006, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Museum presented the first annual BAILEY HOWELL TROPHY, awarded to the Mississippi Collegiate Men’s basketball player of the year. The figure portrays the Mississippi State legend Bailey Howell driving to the goal in Boston Garden, a move he perfected while playing with the Celtics NBA dynasty in the 1960’s. In 1959, Howell signed an NBA contract with the unheard of signing bonus of $10,000; not $10 million. Howell described the atmosphere as more “family friendly” in his day, as the players on teams not only traveled together but often socialized together. In addition, most players had jobs in the off season to “make ends meet.” How times have changed.
