You cannot make soldiers of slaves, or slaves of soldiers. The day you make a soldier of them is the beginning of the end of the revolution. And if slaves seem good soldiers then our whole theory of slavery is wrong.
Confederate General Howell Cobb

These words of a General from Georgia kept coming to my mind in October, 2003, as I worked late into the foundry night, raking the clay, rubbing the surfaces with my hands, and finding the right and consistent surface texture for the larger than life slaves who had become soldiers. Alone there standing eight feet off the ground working the clay, I contemplated how history had indeed proved General Cobb wrong and right. History proved you could make soldiers of slaves and they were good soldiers and slavery was wrong. This pastel study alludes to that same truth.
